The natural landscape is one of awe and beauty, yet since the beginning of time man has set out to alter it. These alterations that man makes come in all shapes and forms. In ancient times they were in the form of the massive pyramids of Egypt and the ancient hanging gardens of Babylon. The present landscape now consists of the many skyscrapers of metropolises and the landscapes of suburbia. The garden design has been apart of this desire to control since the beginning. Gardens in the past were created in majestic proportions with great ideals and plans in mind. They were truly sights of awe and beauty like the natural landscape, but that is the past. The world is changing and so are our values and reasons for creation. Gardens and landscapes are made to be efficient, low cost, and aesthetic in some sense of the word. The concept of beauty and artistic style has been lost in the fight to cerate cheap.
In the following web site I plan to look at the garden not as simply land to be dug up and a shrub to be shoved in, but as an empty canvas to be painted. Gardens are not merely soil and plants, but a design to be created using principals and elements of design.
The following links to your right will take you to the various portions of this site in which you will be shown older gardens, with excellent design. Poorly and properly designed gardens in the present. And last of all a section in which I look at aspects of design and how they relate to the design of a garden or landscape.
